Bjorn was born the son of Earl Einar Stonefist. Earl Stonefist held lands in Illuska far to the north, known as Bennanburgh, with the main hold located on the cliffs overlooking the ocean, called Skyfall. That is, until he was killed in battle. Soon, his brother, Sigvard Snake-In-The-Eye (named that due to the discolored shape in his left iris that resembles a serpent), assumed Earldom over Skyfall and the lands of Bennanburgh. Bjorn soon after was almost killed by his uncle, who wanted him dead so that his own unborn son could succeed Sigvard to the Earldom. Barely escaping his uncle, the 12 year-old Bjorn, carrying the hilt to his father’s broken greatsword Skulltaker, fled to his father’s friend, Finan. Finan was able to get Bjorn away from Illuska, and the two joined the mercenary company, the Iron Snakes.
That was 30 years ago. Since then, Bjorn has fought for the Iron Snakes- and their clients- all across the globe. He has seen warfare in all it’s myriad forms- guerilla warfare, sieges, small skirmishes, massive clashes of armies, ship to ship fighting, and many other things beyond. He’s marched through dense tropical jungles, across arid deserts, climbed mountains, trekked across polar ice caps, and even been deep underground in the Dwarven holds. And always, he keeps the remains of Skulltaker close to him, hoping someday to re-forge the weapon, and use it to take Sigvard’s skull, and assume the Earldom of Bebbanburgh.
During those 30 years, Bjorn has earned a reputation as a man of his word. Once he makes an oath, he keeps it, especially one given to someone he considers a friend. He has on several occasions swooped in to save the day, once even literally. However, his pride has often gotten the best of him, and he has lost friendships and relationships this way. The most costly of which was his lover, Rima Dorae, a belly-dancing gypsy of Tethyrian descent. He keeps a key, given to him by her, as ‘the key to her heart’. He hasn’t had a stable relationship since. Many affairs and prostitutes, but no other loves.
During his travels, he came across a fortune teller, who stopped him and handed him an old Tarot card, the Ace of Swords. Shocked to see his face brandishing the sword in the card, when he asked the fortune teller what it meant, she simply informed him “You will know when the time comes.” Since he’s acquired it, he’s noticed that as he ages and his appearance changes, the image on the card also changes. This puzzles him to no end.
He acquired the surname ‘Ironheart’ during a siege when an arrow impaled his chest, right where his heart was. However, he survived, the arrowhead stopping just short of his heart, and he has since then kept the arrowhead as a good luck charm on a chain around his neck, next to the key.
From another fortune teller, he attained a small voodoo doll and needles, and was told to think long and hard about someone he hates, and then to stab the doll with the needles to give them pain. Doubtless, Bjorn thinks of his uncle Sigvard when he stabs the voodoo doll mercilessly whenever Bjorn is in a foul mood. Who’s to say if it actually works, however, the act of doing it is incredibly therapeutic for Bjorn.
He acquired, from a strange shop keep, a jar of ‘Griffon Grease’, a brand of greasy oil that he has since used to oil his weapons and armor. The stuff seems to keep his armor and weapons rust free and in good shape. He once believed the grease was magical in some way, however, a sorcerer has since disproven this, maintaining that the mysterious substance is not magical in any way, shape, or form. This has been confirmed by several other magic users. Bjorn has since been on the lookout for more of the stuff, as he has about a quarter of the jar left.
He has served with distinction in the Iron Snakes, attaining the rank amongst their number of Staff Sergeant/Platoon Sergeant, but those days are behind him now, as he has since ‘retired’ due to ‘old age’- this is the official reason for his leaving the Iron Snakes, but all of his friends still in the mercenary company know it is to accomplish his lifelong goal. If he is ever to kill his uncle and retake Bennanburgh, he needs to do it relatively soon, as he isn’t getting any younger. To do that, he needs to strike out, and attain funds to pay for the services of the Iron Snakes, to help him take the hold. His first step on this long and dangerous road is to do some work as a guard for the dwarf Gundrin, an acquaintance he has made after washing up on the shores of Neverwinter…
